![]() ![]() You can play FF14 largely as you would any single-player RPG-aside from the fact that you do have to participate in some raids or dungeons to progress the story-but it doesn't pressure you to participate. FF14 even has a commendation system for rewarding players who are especially skilled or helpful, so there's some incentive to be kind.įF14 does have an endgame loot grind, but it never feels as essential as it does in a game like World of Warcraft. That's not to say you won't stumble across the occasional toxic jerk, but based on personal experience, they're nowhere near as common as they are in World of Warcraft's heroic dungeons or The Elder Scrolls Online's Veteran content. The music is also consistently amazing, and, well, all the characters are just frickin' beautiful.īeyond that, Final Fantasy 14 has the friendliest community of any major MMORPG. Square Enix does a good job of making the members of the large cast come off as real people, and some of the main characters have undergone believable changes over the years. Much as in a good singleplayer RPG, much of the narrative unfolds in cinematic cutscenes, and its mature themes touch on everything from loss to redemption. Why you should play FF14įinal Fantasy 14's story remains the best reason to play. And if you ever decide those limitations are too burdensome? You can remove them by buying the FF14 Starter Edition, which gives you access to the same playable content as the free trial and only costs $20. If you're mainly playing for the story, though (and that's generally a good reason to play FF14), these are sacrifices you should be able to live with. You also can't join Free Companies, which are FF14's version of player guilds. You can't use the Market Boards (which means you can't buy or sell stuff).Keep in mind some of the limitations, though: Hope this helps, I appreciate this may not help everyone as this issue has become a bit of a hotbed but hope it can help someone. The upshot of all this is that it may be wiser to make an entirely new account if you want to play through A Realm Reborn and Heavenward with the free trial. Load FF14 from steam and Voila! you can now play FF14 and still keep track of your time! Now press Save & refresh, this will restart Steam if you have it open. In the Executable line, click the file looking symbol on the right hand side and locate the ffxivboot.exe from the Online version you downloaded before and press OK. Now the game is installed fire up the Steam Edit you D/L previously, select Final Fantasy 14 Online from the top left drop down menu, then hit "Edit Launch" in the bottom left. If you have decided to uninstall the game from steam, reinstall it back on, only the intially install, you don't need to do all the updates and what not as you won't be using this version of it, so it will just be the 50-odd meg install you have to get the launcher installed. If you still have the game installed you can pretty much ignore this step, though if you want to save space you can delete the FF14 folder but DON'T for the love of all that is scared use the "Uninstall" in steam! you'll need it for later. Now I appreciate that not everyone will want to do this but it's here if, like me, you want to carry on using Steam to play "kinda" (i'll explain why) So I did some digging and have found a workaround. I for one do have a fancy for tracking my game time and the though of not being able to do this anymore almost had me at the point of not wanting to play the game anymore. I thought I would leave this here as I, for one, have been less than impressed with the misstep SE made in changing the ability for steam users to log into FF14 if they have bought the game through the Mog Station. ![]()
